In Port-Au-Prince this week, Police attempted to suppress student protests, whose demands included adequate reforms to Haiti’s State University and for the President to publish the law fixing minimum wage at 200 gourdes. Police arbitrarily arrested students and used force and excessive amounts of tear gas, resulting in numerous collateral victims. The Platform of Haitian Organizations for the Defense of Human Rights (POHDH) deplores these events.

The civil society organizations that were present at Carlo Merilus’ funeral on May 16th in Berlanger (Communal Section of Verettes in the Artibonite) advocated that the State meet the victim’s family’s social and economic needs.
